It inspired me to find some other REAL sea shanties. Nowadays the phrases “sea shanty” and “sea shanties” are used to describe all music connected with sea and seamen, HOWEVER the real sea shanties were sung without ANY musical instruments, because they were sung DURING WORK on a sea-ship – one sailor sang a short fragment and then the rest responded and/or repeated the same fragment. Because the real sea shanties were purely “work songs” they were relatively simple and had a steady rhythm. Here is the best example I could find:
Somebody wrote a comment to the last video that made me smile: “I'm sure I was a sailor in an earlier life.”
