Edge of Tomorrow (a movie with Bill Paxton!) review

(Originally posted on Sunday, 30 August 2020)

My rating: 9/10

Usually I don't review movies that I have seen only once, but Edge of Tomorrow is a notable exception. Unfortunately I can't get into details of the plot (which is the best part of the movie) because everything will be like giving spoilers. I have to say only one thing – the plot is incredibly thought-provoking and LOGICAL for a movie like this! Respect!

I must admit that I ignored this movie when it was in the cinemas (in 2014), because the movie trailer and the movie tagline (Live. Die. Repeat.) put me off. I thought it would be something about cloning soldiers and not caring about their lives, but it's not the case. Edge of Tomorrow is much more like like Groundhog Day!

The main idea in both movies is very similar – a guy wakes up over and over again in the same day. In Edge of Tomorrow it is later explained why and how (I can't tell you this, not to spoil the movie for you), but in Groundhog day it was never explained. Groundhog Day is “just” a thought-provoking comedy and Edge of Tomorrow is a thought-provoking science fiction.

Please notice that in Groundhog Day the main character sometimes dies too – he wants this day to end so desperately that for some time he keeps committing suicide and still wakes up over and over again! Obviously in Edge of Tomorrow there is much more dying, because it's about a war, but there is no graphic violence in this movie. The “first” day is the worst, but it HAS to be this way to show you what kind of man the main character is in the beginning of the movie and how he reacts to what is going on on a battlefield.

The main difference between these two movies is that in Groundhog Day it's all about the main character and his actions, but in Edge of Tomorrow it's also about the enemy (the aliens) and their actions. Again, I can't explain exactly what it's all about, but the idea is AWESOME!

The ending of the movie is even more surprising and thought-provoking and we (me and my daughter) spent around 15 minutes discussing it. We didn't find any flaw or, more precisely, we came up with an answer to every question about this ending. Cool.

Did you guess why I finally watched Edge of Tomorrow? Yes, because of Bill Paxton! And precisely: because I noticed that Bill Paxton played in this movie while watching the last Youtube video in this post:

Bill Paxton didn't let me down in Edge of Tomorrow. Some of his quotes during the “first” day made me laugh out loud and his acting in the “following” days was perfect – his character was perfectly confused. Respect!
